Buying Used Auto Parts Tips

Thousands of damaged cars end up in junkyards, when we hear the word junkyards, what has crossed our minds is a pile of junk that is increasingly mounting. However that is now a practice of the past, nowadays junkyards are managed more modern and professional. We can track our junkyard inventory by looking at database junkyards. Employees can quickly check their inventory, saving you the long hours you would spend looking. They are easily dismantled and the parts are placed together in groups according to the type. Even parts now are sold online by junkyards. All of the used auto parts are cleaned, repaired and tested.

Almost all junkyards use the hotline system. This system provides ease of information to buyers, when contacting junkyards about used auto parts. The employees will check their inventory database when you are on the phone. If they don’t find the part you need in their inventory, they can use their Hotline to quickly check the inventories of neighboring junkyards. A quick tip about the Hotline: ask the junkyard that is checking other yards what that particular part would have cost if they had it in their inventory. You may be able to negotiate the price with the other dealer.

You must know that all junkyards can be bargained with, when you go to purchase a used auto part. Especially when you buy used auto parts in poor conditions, or not so “lightly used” ask for discounts and bargain for a lower price. You can expect to pay almost half of the cost of new parts. For example, a water pump for the Honda Accord 2.3l auto, may cost $ 150 new. Expect to pay $ 70 (cash) in junkyard. This is one of the advantages to buy used auto parts in junkyards. If you want to try it please check out our parts finder, and  search for junkyards near me or by zip code, city and state in the United States.

Here are a few tips to remember when you go to purchase a used auto part from a junkyard near me or across the United States.

1. Always ask for the mileage of the vehicle – by doing this you know if the parts coming from that donor vehicle have a higher chance of being worn.

2. Request pictures of the part and of the vehicle it came from. This will save you a major headaches of dealing with customer service on a return.

3. Vehicle Identification Number or VIN, and you can call local auto dealerships and their service departments. Have them check all part numbers coming from the donor vehicle, as well as your own for a match.

4. Use that VIN number and get a carfax report. This will always tell you the mileage of the donor vehicle when it was salvaged. Its another layer of protection to insure the mileage on important parts. Examples: engines, transmissions, beds, and many more!

5. Warranty – do not settle for any product with no warranty. There are plenty of ways to find junkyards with a 90 Day to 6 month and even 1 year warranties.  Inquire about the policy of the warranty. Inquire about self installs or if a ASE certified mechanic must install your used auto part.
