Buick sits inside General Motors, and for anyone sourcing used parts that is the most useful fact on this page. Buick models share platforms, engines and transmissions with Chevrolet, GMC and, in earlier years, Pontiac and Saturn. That multiplies the number of donor vehicles that can supply a given part, and it often means something scarce under a Buick part number is sitting on a shelf attached to a Chevrolet.

We search the inventory of more than 14,000 salvage yards and auto recyclers nationwide to find genuine OEM Buick parts.

Which Buick parts interchange with other GM vehicles?

The sharing is extensive, though it varies by component:

  • Enclave shares the Lambda platform with the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook
  • LaCrosse shares its platform with the Chevrolet Impala of the same era
  • Regal is closely related to the Opel Insignia and shares GM’s Epsilon II platform
  • Verano is built on the Delta II platform alongside the Chevrolet Cruze
  • Encore shares the Gamma II platform with the Chevrolet Trax

Drivetrain sharing is broader still. The 3.6-litre V6 and the 6T70/6T75 six-speed automatic turn up across most of the GM front-wheel-drive range.

The caution is the same as always: platform sharing does not mean every part crosses over. Trim, lighting, badging and interior are Buick-specific, and calibration often differs even where the hardware matches. Send us your VIN and we confirm interchange with the supplying yard rather than assuming it.

Why are used Buick 3.6L engines in demand?

Timing chain stretch.

GM’s 3.6-litre V6, in its LY7, LLT and LFX forms, has a well-documented history of premature timing chain wear. Two things drove it: the original chain design, and an Oil Life Monitor calibration that permitted oil change intervals long enough for the oil to degrade, which starves the hydraulic tensioners and accelerates chain wear.

As the chains stretch, the camshafts fall out of correlation with the crankshaft, and the engine throws codes in the P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017, P0018 and P0019 family. Owners usually hear a rattle at cold start first. GM documented the problem across several technical service bulletins, including 12-06-01-009F, and issued Special Coverage Adjustment #11340 and #11340C extending timing chain warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles on affected vehicles. That coverage has now expired on every car it applied to.

This is an interference engine. If a stretched chain jumps far enough, the valves and pistons meet and the repair stops being a chain job and becomes an engine.

For a used-parts buyer that cuts both ways. Replacement 3.6-litre engines circulate through salvage networks in volume, which keeps prices reasonable. But if you are buying one, ask about the chain. A donor engine with documented chain work is worth more than a lower-mileage one without it.

The 6T70 transmission wave plate

If a Buick Enclave has lost 3rd, 5th and reverse, this is almost certainly why.

The 3rd/5th/reverse wave plate in GM’s 6T70 and 6T75 six-speed automatics can crack or fracture. When it does, those three gears go, usually accompanied by code P0776. GM issued Special Coverage #14404A covering the condition for 10 years or 120,000 miles and instructing dealers to replace the 3rd/5th/reverse clutch plate.

The affected list is a good illustration of how far GM parts sharing reaches: 2007–2009 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura and Outlook; 2008–2009 Chevrolet Equinox and Malibu, Pontiac Torrent and Saturn Vue; and the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. Same transmission, same failure, nine badges.

That coverage has expired. Owners facing it now are choosing between a rebuild and a used unit, and the used unit is usually the cheaper path by a wide margin. When you request one from us, ask about the donor vehicle’s mileage and whether the wave plate was ever addressed.

The 2.4L four-cylinder

Buicks with the 2.4-litre Ecotec, mainly the LaCrosse and Regal of that era, have their own known issue. Certain 2010–2011 vehicles fell under GM special coverage program #12313C for a balance shaft chain that could stretch, causing engine noise and, if left alone, potentially serious damage. These engines also have a reputation for high oil consumption, and low oil accelerates wear on the timing components.

If you are shopping for a used 2.4, the oil consumption history of the donor is the thing to ask about.

Older Buicks

Buick built a lot of LeSabres, Park Avenues, Centurys and Regals, and volume is a used-parts buyer’s friend. Even on cars two decades old, the pool of donor vehicles is deep enough that most requests can be filled. Body panels and interior trim in specific colours are usually the constraint on these, not mechanical parts.

If you are keeping one of these on the road, it is worth requesting the part rather than assuming it is unobtainable. A network of 14,000 yards reaches inventory that no single yard would carry.

Which Buick parts do we source most often?

What do used Buick engines and transmissions cost?

We publish our price tiers rather than making you call to find out:

  • Under 50,000 miles — $999
  • 50,000 to 100,000 miles — $799
  • Over 100,000 miles, tested — $599

These apply to engines and transmissions. Smaller components are quoted individually, since price varies with the part, the year and which yard has it. Shipping is arranged through the supplying yard and quoted with the part.

Which Buick models can you find parts for?

We source across the range, including the Enclave, Encore, Envision, LaCrosse, Regal, Verano, Lucerne, Rendezvous, Rainier, Terraza, Century, LeSabre, Park Avenue and Riviera.

How it works

Send us the year, model and part, along with your VIN. On a GM vehicle the VIN also gives us the RPO codes, which identify the exact engine and transmission fitted. That matters here more than on most brands, because several engines and transmissions were offered in the same model in the same year.

We search the network and come back with what is available, including the grade the yard assigned the part and its mileage where that applies. Nothing is charged until the part is located and its condition confirmed.

Every part we supply carries a 30-day warranty.

Call 800-646-4790 or send a request and we will start the search.
