A distributor is an enclosed rotating shaft used in spark-ignition internal combustion engines that have mechanically-timed ignition. The distributor’s main function is route secondary or high voltage, current from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct firing order, and for the correct amount of time. Except in magneto systems, the distributor also houses a mechanical or inductive breaker switch to open and close the ignition coil’s primary circuit.

The first reliable battery operated ignition was developed by Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co. (Delco) and introduced in the 1910 Cadillac. This ignition was developed by Charles Kettering and was considered a wonder in its day. Atwater Kent invented his Unisparker ignition system about this time in competition with the Delco system. By the end of the 20th century mechanical ignitions were disappearing from automotive applications in favor of inductive or capacitive electronic ignitions fully controlled engine control units (ECU), rather than directly tied to the engine’s crankshaft speed.

About Used Distributors

On older engines, the distributor sends spark to each cylinder in the right order and at the right time. Worn shaft bushings, a bad pickup, or a failing module cause misfires or a no-start, and a good used distributor is a cost-effective fix.

What a Distributor Does

The distributor routes high-voltage spark from the coil to each spark plug in the correct firing order, using a rotor that spins under the cap. It is driven off the engine, so it also sets ignition timing, and many distributors house the pickup or ignition module that triggers the spark.

Signs Your Distributor Is Failing

  • Misfires or rough running from a worn cap, rotor, or internal parts
  • A no-start from a failed pickup or ignition module inside the distributor
  • Play in the distributor shaft that upsets timing
  • Oil leaking at the distributor base seal on some engines

What to Check When Buying a Used Distributor

  • Check the shaft for excessive play or wobble
  • Inspect the cap and rotor contacts, or plan to replace them
  • Confirm the pickup or module inside works, on units that house one
  • Match the exact distributor for your engine

Common Applications

Distributors are found on older engines, before coil-on-plug and distributorless ignition became standard. Shaft bushing wear, worn caps and rotors, and failing pickups and modules are the usual reasons for replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a distributor do?

It sends spark to each cylinder in the correct order and timing, using a rotor spinning under the cap. Because it is driven by the engine, it also controls ignition timing, and it often contains the pickup or module that fires the coil.

What are the signs of a bad distributor?

Misfires, rough running, or a no-start are common, often from a worn cap and rotor, a failed pickup or module, or shaft play that throws off timing. Some engines also leak oil at the distributor base.

Should I replace the cap and rotor on a used distributor?

It is wise to. The cap and rotor are wear items, so fitting fresh ones to a sound used distributor gives you a reliable result and rules out the most common failure points.

Are distributors interchangeable?

Only the correct distributor for your engine will fit, time, and fire correctly. Drive, advance, and internal electronics are engine-specific, so match it exactly.
