Used Timing Cover

A timing cover is an integral component, that is especially designed to protect the timing chain, cam belt, or timing belt of the vehicle; from the gravel, grime, and debris found on roads. The timing chain or belt of the vehicle, is used to control the rotations of the crankshaft and the cam shafts; which is placed inside the combustion engine. For as long as the chain or belt are spinning, the vehicle’s engine valves close and open in a synchronized movement; along with the exhaust strokes, and the cylinder’s intake. This will depend on the vehicle, if the vehicle has a timing chain, cam belt, or timing belt. The vehicle has a belt, the timing cover will be able to protect it from damage and dirt. The timing cover is made using metal, or plastic, or in some cases both. For vehicles that feature a timing chain, the timing cover, is used to protect the front section of the engine block; and a timing cover gasket is used. This timing cover gasket is made from metal, and is lubricated using the engine oil.

About Used Timing Covers

The timing cover protects the timing chain or gears and usually carries the front crankshaft seal. When it leaks or its sealing surface is damaged, a used cover restores a clean front end to the engine.

What a Timing Cover Does

The timing cover encloses the timing chain, gears, or belt at the front of the engine and keeps oil sealed in. The front crankshaft seal typically rides in it, and on many engines it also mounts the water pump or a tensioner.

Signs Your Timing Cover Is Failing

  • Oil leaks from the cover gasket or the front crankshaft seal
  • A warped or corroded aluminum cover that will not seal
  • A damaged seal bore that lets the front main seal leak
  • Cracks near mounting points from over-torquing or impact

What to Check When Buying a Used Timing Cover

  • Inspect the crankshaft seal bore for scoring or damage
  • Check the sealing surfaces for warping and corrosion
  • Look for cracks around bolt holes and mounting bosses
  • Confirm it matches your engine's timing arrangement and accessory mounts

Common Applications

Engines with chain or gear-driven timing all use a cover of some kind, and aluminum covers can corrode or warp over many years, while the front seal that rides in them wears and leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the front crank seal part of the timing cover?

The seal is a separate part, but it sits in the timing cover, so a damaged cover seal bore will cause the seal to leak. When replacing the cover, install a fresh front seal at the same time.

Why is oil leaking from the front of my engine?

The two usual sources are the timing cover gasket and the front crankshaft seal, both of which live at the cover. A used cover with good sealing surfaces plus a new seal and gasket usually cures it.

Can a warped timing cover be reused?

If it is warped or the seal bore is damaged, no. It will keep leaking. That is exactly when a sound used cover makes sense.

Are timing covers engine-specific?

Very much so. They are matched to the timing layout, the crank seal size, and the accessories they mount, so use the correct cover for your engine.
