An air flow meter is a device that measures air flow that is how much air is flowing through a tube. However, it does not measure the volume of the air passing through the tube; instead it measures the mass of air flowing through the device per unit time. In simple words, it is an application of mass flow meters for a special medium.

It is used in some automobiles in order to measure the quantity of air going into the internal combustion engine. The vane or flap type air flow meters such as Bosch L-Jetronic and early Motronic EFI systems or Hitachi actually measure air volume, whereas afterwards the “hot wire” and “hot film” air mass meters measure speed of air flow. Sometimes in the flap type meter which includes a spring, which returns the internal flap to the initial position is tensioned too tightly, it can restrict the incoming air and it would cause the intake air speed to increase when not opened fully.

The air flow meter, or MAF sensor, measures the air entering the engine so the computer can meter the right fuel, and a dirty or failing one causes stalling, hesitation, and a check engine light. A used MAF is a cheap fix for a sensor that new can cost hundreds.

What an Air Flow Meter (MAF) Does

The air flow meter, usually a mass air flow (MAF) sensor in the intake duct after the air filter, measures the volume and density of air entering the engine. The engine computer uses that reading to calculate the fuel injection amount, so an inaccurate MAF throws the whole fuel mixture off.

Can I clean my MAF sensor instead of replacing it?

Often yes. Dedicated MAF cleaner spray on the sensing wires, never touched or brushed, revives many contaminated sensors. If cleaning does not fix the symptoms, then the sensor has genuinely failed and replacement is next.

What happens when a MAF fails?

The computer gets a wrong air reading and meters fuel incorrectly, causing hesitation, stalling, poor economy, or rich or lean codes. Some engines run better with the MAF unplugged, falling back to default values, which itself points at the sensor.

Why did my MAF get dirty?

Dust past a poorly sealed filter, or oil carried off over-oiled aftermarket filters, coats the sensing element and skews readings. Fixing the filter situation protects the replacement sensor.
